Nothing here is exotic. It is the list of things that usually go wrong when garden work is quoted casually — and what we do instead.
What we do differently
Each of these costs us something — money, time, or a job we could have oversold. That is rather the point of putting them in writing.
Overgrown clearance is genuinely unpleasant work: dense thorn, hidden hazards, unpredictable volumes of waste. It is also the work most likely to be quoted badly or quietly declined. We built the business around it, which means you are not trying to persuade a reluctant gardener to take your job on.

Typical clearance: waist-high growth to bare, level ground in one to two days.
An hourly rate means that if a job turns out harder than anyone expected, you pay for it. A fixed price means we do. We would rather absorb that than have you watching the clock and wondering what the final number will be, so every quote is one figure for the whole job.

The quote is the invoice, unless you ask for extra work — agreed in advance, never after.
Waste is the biggest cost on most clearance jobs and the easiest place to hide a top-up charge. Ours is in the quote. We are a licensed waste carrier, everything goes to a licensed transfer station, and you can have the waste transfer note for your records.

Tree Preservation Orders, conservation area notice periods, nesting season restrictions. A great deal of West London is affected by at least one of these, and getting it wrong is a criminal matter with an unlimited fine. We check with the council as part of quoting tree and hedge work.

A tired lawn that can be scarified, aerated and overseeded costs a fraction of new turf. A tree blocking light often needs a crown thin rather than removal. A patio with failed joints usually needs repointing, not replacing. In each case the honest answer earns us less — and we give it anyway.
