About our turfing & lawn work
There are two routes to a decent lawn and they cost very different amounts. The first is renovation: scarify out the thatch, aerate the compaction, overseed the thin patches and feed it. The second is replacement: strip it, level it, and lay new turf. A surprising number of lawns that look beyond hope only need the first.
So we look before we quote. A lawn that is thin, mossy and full of thatch is usually compacted and starved rather than dead, and it will come back within a season for a fraction of what turfing costs. A lawn that is genuinely uneven, badly contaminated with weed grasses, or sitting on the wrong levels is a replacement job.
Where we do turf, the preparation is the job. Rotovating, grading to a true level, firming, and raking to a fine tilth is most of the labour, and it is what determines whether the finished lawn is flat and knits in properly or settles into dips over the first year. We also fit artificial grass where a lawn genuinely will not work — heavy shade, dog traffic, or no appetite for mowing.

Assess whether it needs replacing at all
We check thatch depth, compaction, levels and grass species. If renovation will get you there, we will tell you — it is cheaper and less disruptive.
- 02
Strip and prepare
For new turf: old grass and weed off, ground rotovated, topsoil added where needed, then graded to level and firmed. This is where most of the time goes.

Rake to a fine tilth
The final surface is raked fine and true. Turf laid on a lumpy bed telegraphs every lump for the life of the lawn.

Lay, butt and roll
Turf is laid in staggered courses, joints butted tight, edges trimmed to the border shape, then rolled to get root contact with the soil.

Autumn and spring are ideal, because the soil is warm and rainfall does most of the watering. Turf can be laid through summer, but it needs committed daily watering for the first few weeks, so we will be blunt about that before you book a July job.
Keep off it as much as possible for two to three weeks while the roots knit into the soil. Light use after that, with the first cut once it has established and reached around 50mm — set the mower high for that first cut.
More often than people expect. Thin, mossy, spongy lawns are usually compacted and hungry rather than finished, and scarifying, aerating, overseeding and feeding will bring them back over a season for far less than replacement.
In the right situation, genuinely yes — deep shade where grass will not grow, small courtyards, or homes with dogs. It needs a proper compacted base to avoid rippling, and it does still need occasional brushing and rinsing. It is not maintenance-free, just much lower.
